The Republican Party is referred to as the GOP (grand old party) and has the elephant as its symbol. It was formed in the early 1850s, and became a National Party in 1856. The first President of the USA, Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and since his tenure in the White House, the Republicans have had a President in office for about 60 of the last 100 years.
