Vermont was officially named on June 30, 1777. There are two men who claim to be responsible. Dr. Samuel Peters said that in 1763 he stood on top of Mt. Killington and christened the land. Dr. Thomas Young, a Pennsylvania statesman, is credited choosing the name to honor the memory of the Green Mountain Boys.
