Juan Ponce d Leon was a Spanish explorer who was the first to arrive in Florida. After sailing north through the Bahamas in search of a mythical fountain of youth that he had heard of in Indian legends, he landed on the East Coast of the Peninsula near present day St. Augustine. Finding this land of lavish flowers, he claimed it for Spain and named it La Florida, or 'place of flowers'.
