The land that Atlanta is currently built on was originally inhabited by Native Americans from the Creek and Cherokee tribes. In 1823 part of the Creek land was opened to a white settlement. In 1835 some leaders of the Cherokee Nation gave their territory to the United States in exchange for land out west.
