Shays' Rebellion, named after Daniel Shays, was an armed uprising from 1786 to 1787 in western and central Massachusetts. In what was considered the last battle of the Revolution, the rebels sought relief through lower taxes and the issuance of paper currency. The forced the closure of courts in western Massachusetts in an effort to prevent the courts from seizing the property of indebted farmers. Shay's rebellion, led by Daniel Shay was an uprising of men, mostly poor in central and western Massachusetts. They tried to push for paper currency and lower taxes in light of the mass of people who were losing everything and being sent to debtor's prisons as a result of their inability to pay.
