Papyrus is a thick paper like material that comes from the papyrus plant. The papyrus plant grows in wetlands and was quite a abundant along the nile. The plant has many uses including: paper, mattresses, boats and mats. Scrolls were made of papyrus and were the principle paper used by the Egyptians until a better paper was introduced by the Arabs. Papyrus was not necessarily the best writing surface as it was uneven and it would crack if the scroll was large or if the environment it was kept in was too dry. It was a cheap way of making paper and is made from the stem of the plant.
