The fourteenth amendment broadens the definition of a citizen. In the Dred Scott ruling, blacks were not considered citizens, but the fourteenth amendment reversed that.

The 14th Amendment in 1868 stated that all persons born or naturalized in the United States shall enjoy full rights. This was done to protect the rights of freed slaves and minorities
