Fish can drown, but it is pretty much the opposite as it is for humans. Fish are equipped with gills that breath in water. When the fish is taken out of water, the gills can not do their job to breath and the fish essentially drowns.

Yes, fish can drown. If the water they are swimming in, does not have enough oxygen in it, the fish would drown. This is the reason that aquariums have air pumps.
