How are Tsunamis Measured?

Answer

If one is talking about any kind of a measurement when discussing tsunamis, they are normally talking about the height of the waves. These waves are not very high at all until they approach the shallower waters near land. They will then rise up out of the water as they hit the land. That is the height that people will refer to.

There used to be a tsunami intensity scale that was used to measure a tsunami, but it's no longer used. Nowadays, tsunamis are measured by the height of the waves at the shore. For more information see here: http://nctr.pmel.noaa.gov/faq_display.php?kw=1998 Interview with Dr. Frank Gonzalez#3
