Bacteriologist Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928 by mistake. He noticed a mold growing on his petri dishes that killed bacteria. He did not know this was a wonder drug but wrote up his findings. It wasn't until 1940 that this mold, penicillin, was found to be a wonder drug that could kill most types of bacteria.
